Bernice Sims

Bernice Sims(B. 1926) Bernice is a memory painter. Having raised her six kids; she went back to school to get her high school diploma at age 52. During her classes the teacher took them on a field trip to an art museum in her home state of Alabama where she witnessed the work of Mose Tolliver. She thought, “I could do that…,” and with some encouragement launched into her career as an artist. Her paintings are bright, colorful and her figures are rendered in a somewhat childlike manner… Her subject matter reflects her life in the South and the way things used to be: the 60's marches of the Civil Rights Activists, the school she attended at Hickory Hill when she was a child, picking cotton in the fields, etc. She is a very sweet and wonderful woman.
