Thornton Dial Sr.(B. 1928) After retiring from working for a box car company for 33 years in the town of Bessemer , Alabama . Thornton began creating artworks in metal… Eventually he worked through mixed media and began painting and drawing. He creates images of figures, birds and tigers, producing colorful watercolors, paintings, and assemblages that deal with issues of race, nature, and the history of power struggles that have taken place in the American South and anywhere an underdog is fighting for his/ her rights. In 2000 Thornton exhibited simultaneously at the American Museum of Folk Art and the Whitney Biennial 2000. He continues to exhibit his artworks both nationally and internationally.
